It introduces the reader to Tommy Horton, who leaves the mining village of Sengenydd in 1900 to seek his fortune in the great industrial town of Merthyr Tydfil. 

 

He starts off as a coster-monger. Selling fruit and vegetables off a barrow, he made enough money to start up a scrap metal yard and later, a pawn brokers. Falling foul of the law, Tommy spent time in jail, not long after his scandalous marriage and birth of son Ronnie. 

 

However, he he returned to Merthyr and remarkably became a respected business man and sports philanthropist. 

He opened a boxing stable and bought a football club, gaining many achievments along the way. 

His greatest success was, however, the opening of a rubber factory..the first to make condoms in the UK. 

Many turmoils, relationships and incidences littered his life. He suffered tragedy and experienced wonderful happiness. 

He and his son developed a love/hate relationship, which coloured both their lives.

Ron and Tom worked together, lived together and had a love/hate relarionship, many scandals followed them, but eventually, Ronnie married, against his father's wishes when he was in his forties.

This second volume picks up at this point, it covers the post war years 1946-1962 showing the effect of social change on the ideas about contraception, sex before marriage and STDs.

It chronicles the expansion of the business, as well as the sadness, secrets and scandals of both men's private lives.
